| Hillsdale Store The Hillsdale Market House was founded in October 1941 by Elmer Pearson and Elmer Cain. The original store was located at 54 North Howell Street, Hillsdale. Elmer A. Pearson owned and operated the meat department; and Elmer Cain, the grocery department. The original building was approximately 5,000 square feet. In 1947, Philip Williams started working in the meat department. In 1951 the grocery department was purchased from Mr. Cain. In 1955 a partnership was formed between Elmer Cain, Philip Williams and Lawrence Jacobus. A new building was erected in 1957. It was a 25,000 square foot supermarket built at 85 E. Carleton Road. That building was totally remodeled after a fire in June 1963. The current Market House was opened at 210 W. Carleton Road in October 1973. Hudson The grocery store in Hudson began when Carl Guss bought out "Webbs Coffee Ranch" at 225 W. Main Street, Hudson on November 15, 1938. His sons, Don and Bob, joined him in business, which was known as Guss and Sons Market. One June 1, 1949, they moved into the old theater building at 214 W. Main Street. Carl Guss retired in 1953 at which time Don and Bob went into partnership and the store was called Guss Brothers. In 1959, Don and Bob dissolved partnership and then Bob and his wife Edit took over the business under the name of Bobs Super Market. The present Bobs Market House, Inc. is the result of the combined interests of Bobs Super Market, Hillsdale Market House, and Spartan Stores. The partnership was formed in 1968 and the new Bobs Market House was opened for business on April 1, 1969 at 325 Railroad Street, Hudson, Michigan. Market House, Inc. The Market House was successfully managed by Roger L. Boyd from 1973 until his untimely death in 2003. Today, the Hillsdale Market House, Inc. and Bobs Market House, Inc. are separate Michigan corporations with several shareholders. Mr. Jacobus and Mr. Williams have since retired and now Mr. Brett Boyd serves as the General Manager and President of both corporations. Tim Sallows currently serves as the store manager of Bobs Market House and Jeff Francis is the Hillsdale Market House store manager. |
